Gujarat opener Urvil Patel etched his name in the record books by smashing the fastest T20 century by an Indian during a game against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Patel reached three figures off just 28 balls, breaking Rishabh Pant's previous record of 32 balls set in 2018. Patel's explosive century came exactly one year after he had scored the second-fastest 50-over century by an Indian, which had placed him second in the List-A record behind Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball century.
The fastest T20 century overall is held by Sahil Chauhan of Estonia, who took 27 balls to reach the milestone earlier this year. On Wednesday, chasing 156, Gujarat made light work of the target, completing the chase in just 10.2 overs, with Patel remaining unbeaten on 113 off 35 balls. His knock included seven fours and 12 sixes, with powerful shots across various areas of the ground. He was especially dominant against Tripura’s captain, Mandeep Singh, hitting him for 24 runs off just five balls.
In November, Patel had set another record with a 41-ball century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, just a day after being released by Gujarat Titans for the IPL 2024 auction. Despite his impressive performances, Patel was not picked up during the IPL 2025 mega auction, remaining an uncapped wicketkeeper option.
