The venue for the 2025 Champions Trophy remains unresolved following a recent virtual ICC board meeting. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, while in Dubai for Pakistan's Under-19 victory over India, once again stressed the importance of equality in any agreement regarding the tournament's hosting. Despite speculation around a hybrid model, Naqvi did not rule out the possibility but emphasized that any arrangement should be fair for all parties involved.
"We will do whatever’s best for cricket," Naqvi stated to reporters. "If we adopt any formula other than hosting the tournament in Pakistan, it must be based on equality. The most crucial aspect for Pakistan is its respect, everything else is secondary."
Naqvi reiterated his earlier remarks, insisting that "a one-sided arrangement is no longer acceptable." He added, "It cannot continue where we travel to India, but they do not come to Pakistan. Whatever happens must be based on equality."
Sources indicate that the PCB is seeking a long-term, equitable solution, where the hosting model for the Champions Trophy could be mirrored in future tournaments in India. Naqvi's comments raise speculation that Pakistan might accept a hybrid model if it includes provisions such as playing India’s matches outside Pakistan, as well as provisions for Pakistan to play their future matches outside India. Financial compensation for the PCB could also be a part of the negotiation, though Naqvi previously stated that the decision would not be driven by money.
Naqvi's comments suggest significant details still need to be resolved. The matter will likely require approval from both the Indian and Pakistani governments before being presented to the ICC. India was previously denied permission to travel to Pakistan by its government, and the PCB has stated that any agreement must have government approval.
"We need to resolve this once and for all," Naqvi concluded, "and whatever happens must ensure equal treatment for everyone. Any agreement will not be just for the Champions Trophy but will set a precedent for the long term."
The tournament is set to begin in less than 90 days on February 19, with Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi scheduled as host cities. If a hybrid model is adopted, a venue outside Pakistan, most likely the UAE, will be included.
