Suryakumar Yadav, India's T20I captain, has quashed speculation about potential friction with Hardik Pandya following the latter’s removal as the team’s vice-captain. Speaking ahead of the first T20I in Kolkata, Suryakumar referred to Hardik as a "good friend" and a vital part of India’s T20I leadership group. Despite the leadership reshuffle, which saw Axar Patel promoted to vice-captain, Suryakumar expressed confidence in maintaining a solid bond with Hardik.
“Our relationship has always been strong. We’ve played together for a long time, starting from my return to Mumbai Indians in 2018, and it’s been great since then,” Suryakumar said. “Here, I have added responsibility, but when we go back to franchise cricket, I can step back and relax a little.”
He highlighted that both Axar and Hardik are instrumental in shaping the team’s future. “Hardik might not have the title of vice-captain, but he’s always around, contributing to decisions and guiding the team. We have a lot of leaders on the field, which is a big advantage,” he added.
Suryakumar also praised head coach Gautam Gambhir’s approach, under whom India’s T20I side has shown significant progress, winning series in Sri Lanka, South Africa, and against Bangladesh. "I’ve played under Gauti bhai for four years, and we have a great understanding. He gives players the freedom to express themselves and maintains a positive atmosphere,” Suryakumar said.
Looking ahead to the T20 World Cup in early 2026, Suryakumar emphasized building a cohesive team. “While the World Cup is still a year away, our focus is on enjoying the journey, understanding player roles, and building a strong core. Gauti bhai and I aim to ensure this group plays together consistently until the Asia Cup and the World Cup,” he concluded.
India, as defending T20 World Cup champions, is now working toward continuing their upward trajectory under the leadership of Suryakumar and Gambhir.
