Australia's preparations for the Test series in Sri Lanka have hit a snag as stand-in captain Steven Smith deals with an elbow injury sustained during the Big Bash League (BBL). Smith, who has a history of elbow issues, injured his right arm while throwing in the field for the Sydney Sixers during a rain-affected match against the Sydney Thunder. This is the same elbow he underwent surgery on in 2019.
As a result, Smith’s departure for the team’s training camp in Dubai has been delayed while he seeks specialist advice. However, Cricket Australia (CA) remains hopeful that Smith will join the camp later this week.
Smith is set to lead Australia in the two Tests in Galle in the absence of Pat Cummins, who is on paternity leave. If Smith is unable to play, Travis Head could step in as captain for the first time in Tests.
Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who recently had surgery on a fractured right thumb, remains in contention for the tour.
CA stated that Kuhnemann is staying in Australia to allow the surgical wound to heal but is expected to resume bowling soon. If his recovery progresses well, he may join the squad in Sri Lanka.
Kuhnemann, who impressed during the 2023 India tour with figures of 5 for 16 in Indore, was expected to play a key role in Australia’s spin attack for the Sri Lanka series. With his injury affecting his non-bowling hand, his main challenges will involve batting and fielding.
If Kuhnemann is ruled out, allrounder Cooper Connolly could make his Test debut despite having limited first-class experience. Connolly, who helped the Perth Scorchers to a win over Adelaide Strikers, expressed readiness to seize the opportunity if selected.
Adding to Australia’s concerns, Pat Cummins is recovering from "increased left ankle soreness" after bowling extensively during the Test series against India.
Although named captain for Australia's Champions Trophy squad, his participation in the tournament remains uncertain as he seeks specialist rehabilitation advice.
With multiple injury setbacks, Australia faces mounting challenges in assembling a full-strength squad for the Sri Lanka series and beyond.
