Stephen Fleming Praises Ashwin's Return to CSK, Highlights Strategic Auction Picks

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming expressed excitement about R. Ashwin's return to the franchise, describing it as "a homecoming" after the team secured him for INR 9.75 crore (approximately US$1.16 million) at the IPL 2025 auction in Jeddah. Ashwin, who played for CSK from 2009 to 2015, was acquired after a competitive bidding war against Rajasthan Royals (RR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Alongside Ashwin, CSK also acquired Afghanistan’s left-arm wristspinner Noor Ahmad for INR 10 crore (around US$1.19 million). Despite interest from Mumbai Indians (MI), CSK won the bid after raising the price beyond MI’s comfort level. Gujarat Titans (GT) had the right to match, but they backed off when CSK increased the bid. With Ravindra Jadeja retained prior to the auction, CSK looks poised to dominate spin-friendly home pitches.

Fleming emphasized Ashwin's value, stating, "It’s not just about the price – it’s about how someone fits in. There’s an emotional connection with Ashwin in Chennai, making it a great match. Despite being in the later stages of his career, his skill set and experience are invaluable. He’s a strong asset, both with the ball and the bat, and we can use him in various ways."

On Noor Ahmad’s selection, Fleming explained that the bowler will likely play a key role in the middle overs, especially in spinning conditions, to take wickets and put pressure on opposition teams. CSK's bowling strategy is now more focused on taking wickets to slow down teams, rather than just containment. With the addition of Matheesha Pathirana for the death overs, the team aims to address any bowling imbalances from the previous year.

Fleming also addressed the acquisition of New Zealand’s Devon Conway (INR 6.25 crore) and Rachin Ravindra (INR 4 crore), expressing surprise at the lack of competition for Ravindra, who had been the leading run-scorer for New Zealand in their recent 3-0 Test series win in India. Fleming noted, "We were surprised, but we’re thrilled to get Rachin at such a good price. His skills are similar to those of Jadeja, and if his development continues, he could become a crucial player for us in the future. We’re happy to have him on board.
