Sanju Samson, India's wicketkeeper-batter and Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain, has undergone surgery on his finger. However, he is expected to recover in time for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, which is set to begin around March 21-23. His recovery period is estimated to be about a month.
Samson sustained the injury during the fifth T20I against England when a delivery from Jofra Archer struck his finger.
He managed to score 16 runs off seven balls before being replaced due to the injury. Dhruv Jurel took over as wicketkeeper and contributed with three catches in India's dominant 150-run victory.
Because of this injury, Samson was unable to play in Kerala’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final match against Jammu & Kashmir, which took place on February 8 in Pune.
His performance in the T20I series against England was below expectations, as he managed just 51 runs across five matches, averaging 10.20 with a strike rate of 118.60. Samson last played an ODI in December 2023, where he scored a century against South Africa. However, after India's limited ODI schedule in 2024, he was not included in Kerala’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad due to his absence from their pre-tournament camp.
Samson’s next challenge will be leading Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025. Last season, under his leadership, RR reached the playoffs but were eliminated by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the second Qualifier.
