Rohit Doubts Pant's Dismissal After Controversial Review Decision
Rishabh Pant’s dismissal during India’s fourth-innings chase has sparked controversy, with India captain Rohit Sharma questioning the decision to overturn the on-field umpire's call. Pant was dismissed caught bat-pad following a review, just as he seemed to be leading India’s fightback with 64 off 57 balls. At the time of his dismissal, India were 106 for 6, needing just 41 more runs to win. Despite the review ruling in New Zealand's favor, Rohit is uncertain if it was the right call.
"I don’t know about that dismissal," Rohit said after the match. "If we say something, it is not accepted well. But if there is no conclusive evidence, the umpire’s on-field decision should stand." Rohit questioned the evidence behind the decision, particularly with the bat appearing close to the pad, suggesting it could have been the source of the spike on UltraEdge.
Pant’s dismissal came after New Zealand had already missed a chance to review an earlier LBW shout against him. In the 22nd over, Ajaz Patel appealed for a catch off Pant, but the on-field decision was not out. Two balls later, Patel appealed again, this time for a bat-pad catch. The third umpire overturned the original decision, but the replays showed the ball and bat were very close to the pad, causing confusion over the spike.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham explained their review strategy, saying, “We heard two noises and left it up to the umpire’s judgment.” The review ultimately went in their favor, but Rohit felt that Pant’s wicket was a turning point. "Pant was looking really good, and it felt like he would take us through. It was a crucial dismissal, and after that, we were bowled out quickly," Rohit said.
Despite the dismissal, New Zealand went on to win by 25 runs, completing a historic 3-0 series sweep.
