R Ashwin Retires from International Cricket After Distinguished Career

Ravichandran Ashwin has officially retired from international cricket, marking the end of a celebrated career. The announcement came after India's third Test against Australia in Brisbane, part of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ashwin, 38, confirmed his decision during a press conference, stating it was his final day as an Indian cricketer across all formats.

"This is my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats. Although I feel I still have something left to offer as a cricketer, I plan to showcase that in club-level cricket," Ashwin said emotionally. He thanked the BCCI, his teammates, and coaches for their support throughout his career and expressed gratitude for the fierce competition provided by the Australian cricket team.

Ashwin highlighted the importance of his memories with teammates like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane, calling them the last of the "OGs" in the dressing room. While refraining from media questions, he acknowledged the love and criticism he had received from journalists, hoping the same rapport continues for future players.

Ashwin hinted at staying connected to cricket, potentially beyond playing roles in the IPL, where he will represent Chennai Super Kings in 2025, and the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

Rohit Sharma, who shared the stage with Ashwin, lauded his career contributions and respected his decision. "Ashwin has been a match-winner and deserves the right to choose his moment of departure. We stand by him completely," Rohit said.

Ashwin's international career spanned over 13 years, starting in 2010. He played 106 Tests, taking 537 wickets at an average of 24, and scoring 3503 runs, including six centuries. He ranks second among India’s all-time Test wicket-takers, behind Anil Kumble. In ODIs, he claimed 156 wickets in 116 matches, and in T20Is, he secured 72 wickets in 65 appearances. Ashwin’s final Test performance came in Adelaide during the current series, where he picked up 1 for 53 in a day-night match. Known for his all-round skills, Ashwin ends his career as one of only 11 cricketers with more than 3000 runs and 300 wickets in Tests. In recent years, Ashwin faced limited opportunities in overseas Tests and India's white-ball formats. He last played an ODI in October 2023 during the World Cup match against Australia.

Ashwin’s legacy includes a record-equalling 11 Player-of-the-Series awards, alongside Muttiah Muralitharan, and his contribution to India's 2011 World Cup triumph. As he steps away from the international stage, his achievements remain a testament to his skill, dedication, and impact on Indian cricket.
