Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has offered support to Virat Kohli amidst his recent struggles, attributing the issue to a "mental block." Ponting suggested that a break from cricket, similar to the one Kohli took before ending his three-year century drought, could help him regain form.
"The way Kohli is getting out shows he doesn't want to play at those balls," Ponting said. "He's trying to avoid them, but there’s a mental block making him reach for deliveries outside off stump. This has been happening for a while now. He stepped away from the game 12 to 18 months ago, which helped him rediscover his love for cricket, and maybe he needs to do that again."
Ponting observed that Kohli's current mindset might be hindering his enjoyment of the game. "It seems like the love for the game isn't there right now because he’s making it too hard to enjoy. If he wants to continue in Test cricket, he might need a short break, spend time with family, and reflect. The skill and talent are undoubtedly still there, but sometimes stepping away can reignite the passion for the sport," Ponting added.
Ponting remains confident in Kohli’s abilities and believes the Indian star can overcome this phase with the right approach.
