Mithali Raj, the former India captain, has parted ways with Gujarat Giants (GG) ahead of the third edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which is set to begin in February 2025. Mithali, who served as the team's mentor during the first two seasons, will now take on a similar role with the Andhra Cricket Association, focusing on the state’s pathway structures and working with the senior team.
Joining Mithali in departing GG is Nooshin Al Khadeer, the former India offspinner, who served as assistant coach for the previous seasons. Al Khadeer will now focus on coaching the India Under-19 women’s team, which is preparing for the upcoming Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia, where India will aim to defend their title.
The changes at Gujarat Giants come just before the WPL mini-auction scheduled for December 15 in Bengaluru. However, sources confirm that these decisions were made before the start of the 2024-25 domestic season.
Michael Klinger, the head coach of Gujarat Giants, will continue in his role, with Daniel Marsh and Pravin Tambe joining the coaching staff as batting and bowling coaches, respectively. Marsh, who previously served as Tasmania’s head coach and assistant coach for the Australian women’s team, brings extensive experience to the team. Tambe, a renowned spin bowler and IPL veteran, is also working as a spin-bowling coach for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.
Klinger expressed his excitement about building on the progress made last season and developing a winning mindset within the team. He also highlighted the valuable experience gained by Gujarat Giants players, many of whom have represented India since the last WPL season.
Gujarat Giants, owned by Adani Sportsline, finished last in the first two editions of WPL. With the largest purse of INR 4.4 crore heading into the auction, they are expected to be active in the upcoming mini-auction. GG has released six players, including captain Sneh Rana from the inaugural season, as well as Lea Tahuhu and Veda Krishnamurthy.
