Mandla Mashimbyi has been named the full-time head coach of South Africa Women’s cricket team, filling the vacancy left after Hilton Moreeng’s 11-year tenure ended in May. Dillon du Preez, who had served as Moreeng's assistant, temporarily stepped in as the head coach but expressed doubts about continuing in the role, acknowledging that the team needed a fresh perspective.
Mashimbyi’s inaugural task will be overseeing the three-match ODI series against England, which begins in Kimberley on December 4, followed by a one-off Test in Bloemfontein from December 15-18. The England team is currently leading the T20I series 2-0, with the final match set for Centurion on Saturday.
Mashimbyi expressed his honor at being appointed, saying, "I am fully aware of the significant responsibilities and expectations of this esteemed role." A former fast bowler, Mashimbyi played 48 first-class games, 49 List A games, and one T20 match during his domestic career from 2003-2010. He brings a wealth of coaching experience, notably with the Titans franchise, and has previously worked as the bowling coach and assistant coach for South Africa Men. He also served as the fast-bowling coach for Paarl Royals in the SA20 league.
“I am extremely grateful for the exceptional opportunity provided by Titans Cricket throughout my coaching career, and I look forward to using my expertise to elevate the Proteas Women’s team to new heights,” Mashimbyi stated.
