India’s regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur and pacer Renuka Singh will not feature in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Ireland, beginning January 10 in Rajkot. Smriti Mandhana has been appointed captain in Harmanpreet’s absence, with Deepti Sharma serving as vice-captain.
The squad sees the inclusion of Raghvi Bist and Sayali Satghare. Bist recently made her T20I debut during the West Indies series in December, scoring 5 and 31 in two matches. Satghare, called up for the New Zealand ODIs in October 2024, is yet to make her international debut.
Pratika Rawal and Tanuja Kanwar, who debuted during the West Indies ODIs, retain their places in the team. Mandhana also recently captained India in Harmanpreet’s absence during the T20Is against the West Indies, while Harmanpreet returned for the ODIs, scoring 88 runs across three matches.
Shafali Verma continues to miss out despite a stellar performance in domestic cricket, where she scored 527 runs at an average of 75.29 in the Senior Women’s One-Day Trophy, including a remarkable 197 against Bengal. On January 5, she contributed a match-winning 91 off 71 balls in the ongoing One Day Challenger Trophy.
The series is a significant milestone for Ireland, marking their first-ever bilateral tour of India. Ireland have never beaten India in ODIs, losing all 12 previous encounters. The last time the two teams met was during the 2023 T20 World Cup, where India won by five runs.
