Rishi Dhawan, the fast-bowling allrounder from Himachal Pradesh, has announced his retirement from Indian limited-overs cricket at the age of 34. Dhawan played three ODIs and one T20I for India in 2016 and made a lasting impact on the domestic circuit. His announcement follows the conclusion of the group stage of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
While retiring from limited-overs formats, Dhawan indicated he will continue to play first-class cricket, at least through the ongoing Ranji Trophy season. Himachal Pradesh, currently second in Group B, are vying for a quarter-finals spot, with Dhawan contributing significantly—scoring 397 runs at an average of 79.40 and claiming 11 wickets at 28.45 in five matches this season.
In his social media post, Dhawan reflected on his career:
"It's with a heavy heart, even though I have no regrets, that I announce my retirement from Indian cricket (limited-overs). Cricket has been my passion and has given me countless memories that will stay close to my heart. I am grateful to the BCCI, Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association, and the IPL franchises that gave me opportunities to represent my country and state."
Dhawan’s achievements include leading Himachal Pradesh to their maiden Vijay Hazare Trophy title in 2021-22, where he made history as the first player to finish among the top five run-getters and wicket-takers in the same season. He was the tournament’s second-highest scorer with 458 runs and the second-highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets across eight matches.
In List A cricket, Dhawan accumulated 2906 runs at an average of 38.23, including one century, and took 186 wickets at 29.74 in 134 matches. In T20s, he scored 1740 runs at a strike rate of 121.33 and picked up 118 wickets at an average of 26.44 and an economy of 7.06.
In the IPL, Dhawan represented Kings XI Punjab (later Punjab Kings) from 2014 to 2024 and Mumbai Indians in 2013. Over 39 matches, he claimed 25 wickets and scored 210 runs.
Dhawan’s legacy includes his all-round performances, his leadership in domestic cricket, and his pivotal role in Himachal Pradesh’s rise in Indian cricket.
