Gautam Gambhir Returns to Rejoin India’s Test Squad in Australia

Gautam Gambhir, India's head coach, will rejoin the team in Australia on Tuesday after flying back to India for personal reasons. He had missed India's two-day tour match, which was shortened due to rain, against the Australian Prime Minister's XI in Canberra. Gambhir had left following the first Test in Perth, on November 25, with his return scheduled after a brief absence.

India's second Test against Australia, a day-night match in Adelaide, is set to begin on December 6. During Gambhir's absence, the coaching staff, including Abhishek Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate, and Morne Morkel, had overseen the team's training and the Canberra fixture, which India won by six wickets. Key performances in that game came from Harshit Rana (4 for 44) and Shubman Gill (50 off 62 balls).

With Gambhir back, the next task will be finalizing India's playing XI. Rohit Sharma, the Test captain, is returning after missing the first Test to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah had captained India in Rohit's absence, leading India to a dominant 295-run victory in Perth.

Shubman Gill, who was unavailable for the first Test due to a thumb injury, is also in contention to return. If Gill and Rohit replace Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel in the squad, there will be discussions about the opening combination. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul put up a strong 200-run stand in India's second innings during the Perth Test, and early indications suggest they may continue as the openers, with Gill stepping in at No. 3, and Rohit possibly moving to the middle order behind Virat Kohli. Rishabh Pant is also expected to feature in the middle order.
