Gautam Gambhir Confident Despite Setbacks, Stresses Team-First Approach

Gambhir Reaffirms Control Amid Reports of Dressing-Room Tensions

India coach Gautam Gambhir has assured that “everything is under control” in the team’s dressing room following reports of frustration after India’s defeat in the Melbourne Test, which put them 2-1 down in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Speaking ahead of the New Year’s Test in Sydney, Gambhir admitted to having “honest conversations” with the team but dismissed the need to respond to rumors.

“I don’t think I need to address reports. Honest conversations are part of the process,” Gambhir said. “Honesty is crucial if you aim for greatness.”

Despite the setback, Gambhir expressed confidence in the team’s ability to level the series and retain the trophy. “If you’d told me 40-45 days ago we’d be in this position, I’d take it. We’re confident about winning in Sydney. Everything is still within our control,” he said.

The coach acknowledged the challenges posed by out-of-form senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant but refrained from singling them out. “It’s not about individuals; it’s about the team. Winning and losing are collective efforts. Our focus remains on team needs and results.”

Reflecting on the Melbourne Test, where several batters succumbed to attacking shots while trying to save the match, Gambhir emphasized the importance of adapting to match situations over playing a “natural game.”

“The team-first ideology matters most. Individual contributions are vital, but the team’s requirements take precedence,” he asserted.

As India gears up for the Sydney Test, Gambhir reiterated his belief in Indian cricket’s strength, citing honesty as the foundation for success. “Indian cricket is in safe hands as long as honesty prevails in that dressing room. Performance is the ultimate metric for players and coaches alike,” he concluded.
