India's recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat has cast doubts on the Test cricket futures of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. With Rohit voluntarily stepping down for the Sydney Test and Kohli struggling with form, head coach Gautam Gambhir left the decision to the players while emphasizing their hunger and passion for the game.
"I can't predict any player's future," Gambhir said after the series. "It’s up to them. They still have the hunger and passion, and they’re tough individuals. Hopefully, they continue to take Indian cricket forward, but their plans will ultimately serve the best interests of the team."
Rohit, averaging 10.93 across his last eight Tests with only one fifty, clarified during an interview that he isn’t retiring from Test cricket but sat out the fifth Test due to the team's struggle with out-of-form batters. Kohli, meanwhile, showed glimpses of brilliance with an unbeaten hundred in Perth but fell victim to repeated dismissals outside off-stump, leading to frustration.
Reflecting on these challenges, Gambhir noted, "Every individual knows their hunger and role in the team's progress. Whether it’s someone with 100 caps or no caps, fairness in selection is paramount."
India's next Test series is against England in June 2025, leaving a long gap in the red-ball calendar. By then, Rohit will be 38 and Kohli 37, further fueling debates about transitioning to younger players. Gambhir, however, cautioned against premature conclusions, stating, "Five months is a long time in sports. Forms, attitudes, and circumstances can change."
India’s immediate focus shifts to a home T20I and ODI series against England in January-February and the Champions Trophy in the UAE. Players not selected for these squads are encouraged to participate in the Ranji Trophy, which resumes on January 23.
"I believe in the importance of domestic cricket," Gambhir asserted. "If you’re committed to red-ball cricket and available, you should play. Domestic cricket is the foundation for producing the Test players we need."
Gambhir's comments underline the importance of maintaining fairness in selection and the need for players to take domestic cricket seriously, ensuring India continues to thrive in Test cricket’s evolving landscape.
