Former Indian hockey legend and coach Jagbir Singh suffered a heart attack on Friday and is currently in the ICU at Apollo Hospital in Rourkela. The 59-year-old, a two-time Olympian, had been attending team practice with Team Gonasika for the Hockey India League (HIL) when he complained of chest congestion and breathing issues.
Jagbir was swiftly taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a blocked artery. During treatment for the blockage, he suffered a heart attack. His condition remains critical, and his family is on their way to Rourkela.
Known for his exceptional skills as a forward, Jagbir represented India between 1985 and 1996, earning 175 international caps. He competed in the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics and won a bronze medal at the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, followed by a silver in the 1990 Beijing edition.
Jagbir also coached the Indian men’s hockey team at the 2004 Athens Olympics and has played a significant role in shaping Indian hockey. In the current edition of the HIL, he joined Team Gonasika during the player auctions, helping form a strong squad by securing top players like Manpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh alongside MM Somaya.
The hockey fraternity is rallying behind the decorated Olympian, wishing him a swift recovery.
