UP Warriorz have appointed Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma as their new captain for the 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL). She takes over from Alyssa Healy, who is unable to play due to a stress injury in her right foot.
Deepti, born in Agra, has been a key performer for the team. She is their second-highest wicket-taker with 19 wickets in 17 matches and has also contributed with the bat, scoring 385 runs in 16 innings. In WPL 2024, she had an outstanding season, scoring 295 runs at an impressive average of 98.33 and a strike rate of 136.57. She also took ten wickets with an economy rate of 7.23.
Having led Bengal in domestic cricket and captained East Zone in the Senior Women's Inter-Zonal One Day Trophy in 2024, Deepti brings leadership experience to the role. She also captained Velocity in the Women's T20 Challenge in 2022.
Expressing her excitement, she said, "I am honored to lead UP Warriorz, a team from my home state. We have a strong squad, and we look forward to playing in front of our fans in Lucknow, inspiring the next generation of women cricketers."
UP Warriorz will miss Healy’s presence, as she is their top run-scorer in WPL history with 428 runs in 17 matches. The Australian wicketkeeper-batter has struggled with injuries recently, missing part of the Women’s Ashes and dealing with knee and foot injuries over the past year. To replace her, the Warriorz have signed West Indies all-rounder Chinelle Henry for the season.
The team will begin their WPL 2025 campaign against Gujarat Giants on February 16 in Vadodara. This season, for the first time, they will also play matches in front of their home crowd in Lucknow.
