Ben Sawyer has been reappointed as the head coach of the New Zealand women’s cricket team for an additional two years, extending his tenure until December 2026. This period will include the women’s ODI World Cup in India in late 2025 and the T20 World Cup in England in mid-2026.
Sawyer guided the White Ferns to their first-ever T20 World Cup title earlier this year, defeating South Africa in the final. White-ball captain Sophie Devine expressed her delight at the reappointment, saying, "The work Ben has done with the White Ferns and for women’s cricket in New Zealand has been monumental. Locking him in for another two years brings consistency, which is crucial for us."
Previously an assistant coach with the Australia women’s team, Sawyer first took charge of the White Ferns in June 2022 on a two-year contract that concluded after the India tour in October 2024. His reappointment followed an extensive review process, according to New Zealand Cricket (NZC).
Despite a rocky start to the year with just one win in 13 T20Is, the White Ferns turned their fortunes around under Sawyer’s leadership during the T20 World Cup in the UAE. Liz Green, NZC’s head of women’s high performance, praised Sawyer for instilling belief and trust in the team and contributing to the development of New Zealand’s women’s cricket pathway.
The White Ferns will next face Australia in a three-match ODI series starting December 19 in Wellington. The squad for the series will be announced soon.
Fans attending the upcoming matches will also have the opportunity to see the T20 World Cup trophy up close, as NZC plans to showcase the trophy during the games.
