Bangladesh Misses Direct Qualification for 2025 Women's ODI World Cup

Bangladesh missed out on direct qualification for the 2025 Women's ODI World Cup following their eight-wicket defeat to West Indies in Basseterre on Friday. With this loss, they finished with 21 points in the Women's Championship table, tied with New Zealand. However, New Zealand secured the sixth and final automatic spot, having registered nine wins compared to Bangladesh’s eight.

New Zealand joins Australia, India, England, South Africa, and Sri Lanka in qualifying directly for the World Cup, scheduled to take place in India later this year. Meanwhile, Bangladesh will compete in the World Cup qualifiers alongside West Indies, Pakistan, and Ireland. Scotland and Thailand will also join the competition, with two teams from the six advancing to the main event.

The third ODI between Bangladesh and West Indies turned out to be a one-sided affair. Batting first, Bangladesh struggled and were bowled out for just 118 runs in 43.5 overs. Sharmin Akhter was the top scorer with 37 runs. At one stage, Bangladesh seemed stable at 94 for 3, but they suffered a dramatic collapse, losing their last seven wickets for only 24 runs in 13 overs.

Karishma Ramharack claimed her second consecutive four-wicket haul, conceding only 12 runs in her 6.5 overs, while Zaida James chipped in with two wickets.

West Indies chased the target comfortably in 27.3 overs, with Qiana Joseph scoring 39 and Deandra Dottin remaining unbeaten on 33. Marufa Akter and Nahida Akter picked up a wicket each for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s tour of West Indies will continue in Basseterre, with three T20Is scheduled on January 27, 29, and 31.
