The Bangladesh government has established a fact-finding committee to address the ongoing player payment issues in the 2024-25 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The decision, announced by the sports ministry on Thursday, comes amid growing concerns over unpaid wages.
In an official statement, the ministry emphasized that the National Sports Council (NSC) had taken note of various media reports regarding the non-payment of players and warned that failure to honor contractual obligations could damage the reputation of both the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the BPL.
The committee consists of three members:
- Humayun Kabir (NSC Director, Sports)
- Sajia Afrin (NSC Assistant Director, Sports)
- Saiful Islam (Private Secretary to the NSC Chairman)
The committee has been given seven days to investigate and submit its findings.
Unpaid Wages Spark Protests
The issue has caused significant challenges for the BCB, which reportedly did not secure bank guarantees from all franchises before the tournament began. Reports indicate that multiple teams have failed to pay their players, with the Durbar Rajshahi squad leading the protest.
Rajshahi’s local players boycotted a practice session in Chattogram, while their overseas counterparts refused to play against Rangpur Riders in Dhaka.
In response, the BCB has threatened legal action against the Rajshahi franchise. Meanwhile, Tom Moffat, CEO of the World Cricketers Association, expressed disappointment over the situation, urging the board to take immediate action.
