Afghanistan’s Shapoor Zadran Announces Retirement from International Cricket

Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran has officially retired from international cricket, bringing an end to a career that spanned over a decade.

The tall left-arm pacer, known for his aggression and fast-bowling prowess, represented Afghanistan in 44 ODIs and 36 T20Is, taking a total of 80 wickets. His last international match was in 2020, before announcing his retirement on Thursday at the age of 37.

A fiery competitor, Shapoor was inspired by Shoaib Akhtar and played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s rise in world cricket. He gained a cult following during the 2015 ODI World Cup, where he took ten wickets at an average of 26.50. His scalps included top names like Steven Smith, David Warner, Kane Williamson, Tillakaratne Dilshan, and Mahmudullah.

One of Shapoor’s most iconic performances came during Afghanistan’s first-ever World Cup victory against Scotland in Dunedin. He took 4 for 38 in his ten overs to help restrict Scotland to 210.

Then, in a dramatic final-wicket partnership, batting at No. 11, he contributed to an unbeaten stand of 19 runs, striking the winning boundary to seal a thrilling one-wicket win with three balls remaining. He remained unbeaten on 12 runs, his second-highest ODI score.

Shapoor’s Farewell Message
In an emotional statement shared on his Facebook page, Shapoor described his retirement as “one of the toughest decisions” of his life.

“My journey began in the most challenging times of Afghan cricket. I faced difficulties, played under limited resources, and overcame many obstacles, but I never lost faith.

The support of cricket fans, my teammates, coaches, and especially my family kept me going through every hardship. I sincerely thank everyone who stood by my side throughout this long journey.”

He also expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his family, friends, and Afghan cricket fans, calling them his greatest strength.

Shapoor Zadran’s contributions to Afghanistan cricket will be remembered as he bids farewell to the international stage.
