Many States and Union Territories have merged their health insurance initiatives with AB PM-JAY, extending government-funded medical coverage to over 18 crore families nationwide.

Significant expansions to the scheme have occurred recently. In March 2024, 37 lakh families of ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and Anganwadi helpers were brought under its umbrella. Furthermore, on October 29, 2024, the Government included all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of socio-economic status, granting them free treatment benefits of up to ₹5 lakh per year. This move is set to benefit approximately 4.5 crore families or 6 crore individuals in this age group.

As of November 30, 2024, the scheme has verified about 36 crore beneficiaries and authorized over 8.39 crore hospital admissions worth ₹1.16 lakh crore. The initiative has led to significant reductions in out-of-pocket hospitalization expenses for beneficiaries.

This information was shared in a written reply by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, in the Lok Sabha.
